Earth Day 2018

COME JOIN US! Help Longmeadow celebrate Earth Day on April 28, 2018

On Saturday, April 28th come to the Recycling Center on Pondside Road in the morning from 9 - 12 noon and help us celebrate Earth Day 2018 (annual Recycling Center sticker required).

This is our opportunity to join in the 48th annual celebration of the world-wide commitment to care for the Earth.

Here in Longmeadow we have have had a recycling program for 39 years. This program as it has evolved over the years has saved natural resources and energy and has reduced pollution of our environment. Moreover, with the adoption of our Waste Reduction Program in 2006 we have reduced our waste disposal costs by over $1,000,000 dollars and earned more than $500,000 dollars through the sale of recyclables.

In spite of this obvious success, we are seeing our annual tonnage of trash increase at a time when disposal costs are rising. The best way to change this trend is through a renewed commitment to recycling.

We will have some material available to show what should and should not go into your recycling bin.

The National Earth Day Network has selected “End Plastic Pollution” as its theme for this year (https://www.earthday.org/). Longmeadow initiatives in this area began last year with a campaign to keep plastic bags out of the recycling bins and to recycle them at retail stores. We have also purchased a rolloff container for recycling bulky rigid plastic.

We hope you will use this Earth Day celebration as an opportunity to renew our stewardship of our Earth through a renewed commitment to recycling.
