Commissioner's Corner
The tennis racquets, soccer balls, field hockey sticks and footballs have been relegated to the closet. The last of the stubborn oak leaves have fallen and have been raked and bagged. The holidays are upon us with winter winds and snow around the corner. Snow lovers look forward to this season. They relish the powdery stuff for downhill and cross country skiing. The icy temperatures provide a natural outdoor skating rink. For those that cringe at the sight of natures ice crystals, dont despair. Our winter brochure provides many indoor activities that will entice you to leave your den and get out during this season of short days and long nights.
Longmeadow Parks & Recreation Department is not just for our youth in the community. Our Winter 2010 Brochure offers a variety of programs for adults of all ages. Bari Thomas and Mary Hannigan have worked hard to put together adult programs that will appeal to everyone. We provide Adult Enrichment such as Ballroom Dance, Cribbage, Money Management, Yoga, Karate, Tai Chi, Basketball, Volleyball, Softball, Water Aerobics, Strength Training, and a myriad of day trips. Look inside for some new Spring and Summer trips to take advantage of!
I hope the younger set got a chance to check out the new Greenwood Splashpad. It's a great and safe way for them to cool off and have fun at the same time.
Longmeadow Parks & Recreation Department has been soliciting ideas regarding the use of the space where the Bliss tennis courts now reside. A survey was sent out in the fall and we continue to seek input from Longmeadow residents. Some thoughts for the space are to maintain two tennis courts and for the remaining space build a regulation size basketball court or bocce courts. If you have an opinion or suggestion, please feel free to email or call the Community House at customerservice@longmeadow.org or call 413.565.4160.
Take a moment to peruse the brochure and get involved in an activity or program that gets you out of the house and improves your overall mental outlook during the short sunlit days of winter.
Have a fun, safe & healthy winter,
Kate Tobin, Park & Recreation Chairwoman
